Ellen graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours in Law) from the University of Sydney in 2017, ranking in the top five students in her cohort and completing an honours thesis on the intersections between criminal law and migration law. During her studies, Ellen volunteered with a range of organisations including tutoring adults from refugee backgrounds. Ellen also worked as a Research Assistant to Professor Ben Saul, Dr Rayner Thwaites and Associate Professor Andrew Edgar, researching areas including public international law, terrorism, refugee law, administrative law and human rights. Ellen also worked as an intern at the Sydney Centre for International Law, as well as a Clerk and then Senior Paralegal at the commercial firm Allens, where she assisted on pro-bono cases relating to refugee issues.
After graduating, Ellen completed her Practical Legal Training at the Refugee Advice and Casework Service. Ellen was admitted to practice in May 2019. Ellen practised as a Graduate Solicitor, Solicitor and then Senior Solicitor at the NSW Crown Solicitor’s Office, completing rotations within the Criminal Law (Terrorism High Risk Offenders), Child Protection, Constitutional & Administrative Law and Employment Law & Industrial Relations teams. At the Crown, Ellen specialised in administrative law and statutory interpretation. Ellen joined Clothier Anderson Immigration Lawyers at the end of 2021. Ellen continues to work on complex matters including but not limited to character matters, permanent visa cancellations, and refugee and humanitarian matters. Ellen presently runs a judicial review practice in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia and Federal Court of Australia, as well as a merits review practice before the Immigration Assessment Authority and Administrative Appeals Tribunal. Ellen has also co-authored chapters of the Australian Yearbook of International Law and published her thesis on the sentencing of non-citizens in the UNSW Law Journal. |
